It's time to get going for ACT Rostrum's annual inter-club debating competition.

Warwick Everson Debating Trophy Competition 2010

 This year the debating competition will be a knockout tournament managed by the Training Council.  At the Dais meeting on 20 May 2010 a draw for the first heat resulted the following clubs competing against each other.  Yass Rostrum Club, as the Trophy winner in 2009, will have a bye in the first heat, and will debate the winner of the Phillip vs CCEC debate.

The final will be between the two winning clubs from the second heat, and will be held at the Spring Fling, usually in mid to late September.

For each debate, the first club listed in each pair will contact its opponent to arrange a venue for the debate, and propose the topic.  
The second club will choose whether to present the affirmative case, or the negative case; and will be responsible for arranging the adjudicator. 
Each debate in heats 1 and 2 must be adjudicated by one accredited critic, with no affiliation to either club.

Final

The Training Council will arrange the motion, the affirmative and negative clubs, and three adjudicators. The Debater of the Year will be chosen from those team members debating in the final.

Information required:

  • Club and names of team members
  • full wording of debate motion
  • date and venue of debate, and
  • name of adjudicator.

A score sheet will be provided to the adjudicator, who should return this sheet with the result and scoring details.  The Syllabus contains a list of accredited critics in each club, or you can contact the Training Council for assistance.



Yass team the debate winner in 2009

Yass club won their grand final debate Thursday 5th November at the annual Spring Fling. They defeated Woden Club who were in the Grand Final for the first time.

The topic was: "That our government knows what is good for us". Woden took the affirmative, Yass the negative.

It is the third time that Yass has won the trophy. There have been four competitions to date. Phillip won in 2008. The Debater of the year trophy for 2009 was shared by Doug Gillespie and Jim Fulton.
